- “Californians who have lost their employment now have a ready path to healthcare coverage during the COVID-19 crisis either through Medi-Cal or the plans offered via Covered California, thanks to a partnership between Covered California and the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS). Effective Friday, March 20, Covered California opened the health insurance exchange to any eligible uninsured individuals who need health care coverage amid the COVID-19 national emergency. In their March 20 press release, Covered California stated, “All medically necessary screening and testing for COVID-19 are free of charge, and all health plans available through Medi-Cal and Covered California offer telehealth options.” DHNC has additionally put new steps in place to insure that those eligible for Medi-Cal can sign up easily, and get covered immediately. Anyone who meets Covered California’s eligibility requirements, which are similar to those in place during the annual open-enrollment period, can sign up for coverage through the extended deadline of June 30, 2020. Learn more and sign up for coverage at https://www.coveredca.com/.”
Renters & Homeowners
- Make sure to know your rights during this time! Do not allow yourself to be evicted: https://hcidla2.lacity.org/covid-19-renter-protection
- LA CITY COUNCIL STRENGTHENS RENTER PROTECTIONS
A new city ordinance prohibits landlords from making eviction threats during the COVID-19 pandemic. Landlords are currently prohibited from evicting tenants who are unable to pay rent due to COVID-19. But tenants' rights groups report that landlords are posting eviction notices, and demanding that tenants pay rent using their Federal Stimulus Check. This new ordinance gives tenants a tool to use against landlord harassment.
Landlords that are not in compliance with the ordinance could potentially face lawsuits from tenants, with damages of up to $10,000, or $15,000 for tenants that are elderly or disabled tenants.
For more information on the ordinance, please contact your LA City Council office here or read more here. If you are a tenant or a landlord in the City of Los Angeles, and have questions about your rights during COVID-19, please contact the Housing and Community Investment Department here or call (866) 557-7368.
